You would think being a Mexican actor would help when three Mexican directors you were already friends with all went on to become global superstars.
Gael Garcia Bernal received his breakout role in Alejandro González Iñárritu’s breakthrough film, “Amores Perros,” both he, bff Diego Luna and filmmaker Alfonso Cuaron went on to larger international acclaim with “Y Tu Mama Tambien,” and Guillermo del Toro co-produced their latest film “Rudo Y Cursi,” (directed by Cuaron’s brother Carlos).
But that didn’t help them out any. Apparently both Luna and Bernal auditioned for “The Hobbit” (who knew they were doing auditions already?) that del Toro is helming and the “Harry Potter” film that Cuaron directed, but both of them received polite, “don’t call us, we’ll call you responses.”
“Well, we auditioned for “El Hobbito,” laughed Bernal in an interview with Movieline. “Yeah, the same thing happened when we auditioned for Harry Potter [and the Prisoner of Azkaban, which Alfonso Cuaron directed]. They said, “Uh, we’ll call you.” And they never called us! Basically what happened with Harry Potter is that part of the audition was to fly with a broom, and we did it, but it didn’t look so good because we hadn’t done it in a while. [To Luna] Right?”
Mexican hobbits? South of the Border teenage wizards? They’re joking, right? Hard to tell. Either way, you can see them both together again soon in “Rudo Y Cursi,” a soccer (not really about soccer) comedy that opens up in limited release this weekend (May 8).
And now we know: Cinco De Mayo is the Mexican April Fools’ Day. the revelations are coming fast and quick today…
It IS a joke.
