Got a Tip?

Future Scares: Ben Wheatley’s ‘Kill List’ & Elizabeth Olsen’s ‘Silent House’ Get 2012 Release Dates

So, looking for some scares that don’t involve some footage shot for about $10 and then cobbled together with some jump scares? (That’s right we’re looking at you “Paranormal Activity 3“). Well, you might have to wait until 2012 but the early part of the year should satisfy your thirst for cinematic thrills.

Making big waves on the festival circuit this year, everyone has been talking about Ben Wheatley‘s “Kill List.” And film we that heartily endorse — even though it left some us feeling literally, physically ill — it stars Neil Maskell, Michael Smiley, Myanna Buring and Emma Fryer in a story is probably best left to unfold as you watch. But falling somewhere between a domestic drama, a hitman thriller and a pastoral horror flick, it’s not really like anything you’ve ever seen it’s guaranteed to leave you reeling for hours afterward. After traveling the fest circuit all year, IFC Midnight will unveil the film On Demand on January 4, 2012 before going wide on February 3rd. But if you want to see it on the big screen sooner, it plays at the Walter Reade Theater Thursday, October 27 at 9:15pm as part of the Film Society Lincoln Center’s Scary Movies Festival.

Meanwhile, rising star Elizabeth Olsen gets her first horror flick out of the way in “Silent House.” Premiering at Sundance earlier this year, the remake of the Uruguayan film “La casa muda,” from co-directors Chris Kentis and Laura Lau centers on a young woman who goes to fix up the family summerhome only to discver *GASP* it may be haunted. Not exactly the most original story, but with Olsen now firmly on the Hollywood radar, this one will certainly attract some interest. Open Road Films and Liddell Entertainment have wisely slated the movie for a March 9, 2012 release date, undoubtedly hoping the actress comes in for a nomination for “Martha Marcy May Marlene” so that they can ride the railcoats of the ensuing publicity she’ll receive. The movie will come up against a some stiff competition though with “Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters,” “The Lorax,” “Project X” and “Safe” all set to open the same weekend. 1. I think it\’s worth noting that Silent House is a remake of an Uruguayan film of the same name, notorious because the whole thing is one single tracking shot. Technically impressive, really scary at time, but really bad in general. I can\’t imagine the remake being any better.
