Not simply content with a $91 million worldwide gross for its 2009 “Friday The 13th” remake, Platinum Dunes decided to pull an “Amazing Spider-Man” and announce an unnecessary second reboot in the works for 2015. However strange the decision may be though, it’s served as a new chance for those behind the property to expand the Jason Voorhees universe, and now they’ve chosen to do that to the tune of weekly hour-long installments.
Emmett/Furla/Oasis Films and Crystal Lake Entertainment have announced (via Deadline) that they plan to produce a drama series based upon “Friday the 13th” for TV, to be executive produced as well by Sean S. Cunningham, director of the 1980 original. Writers Bill Basso and Jordu Schell have been tapped to script a new storyline based around Crystal Lake, one that will reportedly feature Jason in “multiple time periods,” and also reveal new secrets of the Voorhees clan.
It all seems straying down the path of “Texas Chainsaw Massacre” in concept, and one wonders if the show will introduce a new family member each week to keep things interesting. But let’s not forget, “Friday The 13th” existed once before in the ‘80s as a three-season TV show—a magic artifact-hunting concept without Jason that attracted the likes of David Cronenberg to direct—so we’ll soon see if the new iteration can build a similar pedigree.
