Got a Tip?

Frank Grillo Testing To Play Villain In ‘Captain America 2’

In movie years 2014's “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” is not that far away. Production is scheduled to start next spring and so casting is still in full swing. Obviously Chris Evans is back as Cap, Sebastian Stan must be back as the titular James Buchanan 'Bucky' Barnes turned The Winter Soldier, Scarlett Johansson will reprise her role as S.H.I.E.L.D. agent the Black Widow (who met Captain America in “The Avengers”) and Anthony Mackie will appear as The Falcon (Mary Elizabeth Winstead is also rumored to have won the role of the female lead, but that's unconfirmed as of right now)

So who else is joining the cast? Well apart from say, usual suspects like Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury, it appears that actor Frank Grillo is testing for a villain role in the film according to various Tweets, and one confirming it all from the actor himself. What role? Crossbones (Brock Rumlow), who usually appeared in the comics as a henchman to the Red Skull. He also has a significant role in the "Civil War" storyline that also includes Falcon and Winter Solider, so this could be exactly where Marvel is drawing their story.

As for additional villains in the movie, we do know that Hugo Weaving would rather not return as the Red Skull, but he’s under contract, so tough beans. And Toby Jones did play Arnim Zola in “Captain America: The First Avenger,” but that was set in the past, so it’s unlikely that 'Winter Soldier' primarily set in the present day Marvel Universe (minus some flashbacks to WWII we're sure) would feature Zola. but Crossbones has ties to Zola in the comics too, so who knows.

As for Frank Grillo, you probably best remember him from as the trainer in "Warrior" and a significant role in "The Grey." He's also been working steadily since those two break out roles. He appeared in "End of Watch" earlier this year, and coming up he has supporting roles in "Gangster Squad," "Zero Dark Thirty" and the Sly Stallone-penned "Homefront" among others.

Directed by Anthony and Joe Russo, "Captain America: The Winter Soldier" hits theaters on April 4, 2014. [Via Comic Book Movie]
