Francis Ford Coppola Signs With An Agency To Help Find Financing For The Long-Awaited ‘Megalopolis’

Sometimes even the biggest names in Hollywood history need a little help to bring a project to life. Recently, we saw Martin Scorsese rely on the financial generosity of Netflix to allow for “The Irishman” to actually get made, after years and years of trying with traditional studios. Now, in the case of Francis Ford Coppola, the filmmaker is hoping that enlisting the help of an agency will get the long-awaited “Megalopolis” in theaters.

According to Deadline, Coppola has signed with the agency CAA, in an attempt to ensure that his passion project, “Megalopolis,” will actually get financing and distribution. The director has been sitting on this project for almost 20 years, trying time and again to get the appropriate funds together to bring the film to life. He even went so far as to film second-unit photography for the project in New York City back in 2001, but that was quickly stopped after the 9/11 attacks. “Megalopolis” is expected to tell the story of a master architect and city designer that aims to create a utopia in New York City.

Even without the funding and distribution in place, Coppola has already begun casting for his future feature. Names like Jude Law and Shia LaBeouf have both been confirmed by the filmmaker as people who have been approached for roles in the ambitious film. The director has previously said that he hoped to begin filming on “Megalopolis” in 2019, but with the end of the year quickly approaching, it’s unclear whether or not that can happen.

Either way, it’s interesting to see Coppola sign with an agency to help with the process. Previously, he wasn’t attached to a specific agent.

In 2019, Coppola has been in the headlines thanks to new restorations and cuts of his famous films “The Cotton Club” and “Apocalypse Now,” which were both in theaters recently and will arrive on Blu-ray soon enough.
