Fox Searchlight has acquired North American rights to Wayne Wang’s upcoming adaptation of Lisa See’s “Snow Flower And The Secret Fan.”
Adapted for the screen by Ron Bass, Angela Workman and Michael Ray, the film is cross-generational drama that explores the female friendships between two girls in 19th Century China and the modern day. Jeon Ji-Hyun and Li Bingbing will star in the pic with Hugh Jackman also appearing in a cameo as a club owner, a role that’ll see him perform a country-western song in Mandarin. Zhang Ziyi was also originally set to star in the picture but later dropped to only a role as producer.
2010 has kind of been a slow year for Fox Searchlight with the studio only releasing films such as “My Name Is Khan,” “Our Family Wedding” and “Just Wright” and, even though it’s early days, things are looking pretty bleak — even the “Crazy Heart” trailer is still on the studio’s website front page.
They do, however, have the Duplass Brothers’ hearty comedy “Cyrus” up their sleeve, set for a summer release and will surely pick up a few more projects along the way. No word on when ‘Snow Flower’ may hit theaters but considering filming wrapped earlier this year, a fall release is probably not out of the question.
