While Terrence Malick of late has, for some, turned into a twirling-magic-hour parody of himself with “To The Wonder” and “Knight Of Cups,” it’s easy to forget he can still conjure truly inspiring movie magic unlike any other. And for those who have lost faith, they might want to get ready for it to be restored with his upcoming documentary “Voyage Of Time,” because the first trailer has arrived, and it looks nothing short of stunning.
The decades-in-the-works movie will be arriving in two versions — an IMAX cut narrated by Brad Pitt, and a longer feature version narrated by Cate Blanchett — and will ambitiously track the past, past and future of the universe. Holy shit. Basically, it looks like a giant montage of all the nature and space stuff from “The Tree Of Life,” and frankly, that’s just fine by me. Here’s the official synopsis:
Voyage of Time: The IMAX Experience is a one-of-a-kind celebration of life and the grand history of the cosmos, transporting audiences into a vast yet up-close-and personal journey that spans the eons from the Big Bang to the dinosaur age to our present human world … and beyond. A labor of love from one of American cinema’s most acclaimed and visually exciting filmmakers, Terrence Malick (The Thin Red Line, The Tree of Life), Voyage of Time has been nearly four decades in the making and represents the filmmaker’s first foray into documentary storytelling. The film’s panorama of awe-inspiring images will take you into the heart of monumental events never witnessed — from the birth of the stars and galaxies to the explosion of diverse life-forms on planet earth, including humankind — in immersive new ways that only IMAX can deliver. This is a cosmic experience — a hymn to the glories of nature, life and scientific discovery — in which all the elements come together to form Malick’s most original film to date.
Voyage of Time: The IMAX Experience, a 40-minute, giant-screen adventure narrated by Brad Pitt, which immerses audiences directly into the story of the universe and life itself, will be shown exclusively in IMAX® theatres.
The 40-minute, Pitt narrated, “Voyage Of Time” opens on October 7th. [via The Film Stage]
To the Wonder and Knight of Cups are both masterful films. Just saying.
To each his own I guess. I loved everything he did except those two which lacked any real character or awe unlike everything he did before
The response to the Knight of Cups trailer was universal praise as well, if I remember correctly. No one thinks the man has lost his cinematic eye, so yeah, a trailer isn’t going to convince me he’s back and a doubling down on his rambling Tree of Life philosophizing sounds just painful.
I’d rather not watch another science film about the cosmos where everything is CGI. I don’t care what name is behind it.
