Got a Tip?

First Trailer For Hong Sang-Soo’s TIFF-Bound ‘Yourself And Yours’ Is In-Your-Face And Bizarre

The summer days are winding down and the cold winds of fall are coming through. As such, we’re getting ever closer towards this year’s TIFF festivities. More and more, we’re getting a better look at some of the movies coming to Canada’s most famous film festival — and that continues today, as we get our first trailer for “Yourself And Yours,” the newest film from the always-unconventional South Korean writer-director Hong Sang-Soo (“Right Now, Wrong Then,” “In Another Country”).

The first teaser, while expectedly brief, is as intimate, unusual and uncompromising as you’d expect from the director, and it promises another provoking and disconcerting look at modern relationships. It can best be described as in-your-face. From its unusual editing, uncomfortable zoom-in, awkwardly lingering close-up shots and unrelenting focus on the upcoming film’s female protagonist, it’s as predictably unpredictable as you’ll expect from Hong. As off-putting as it is inviting, it unquestionably feels entirely true to itself, even as a spin on Luis Buñuel’s final film, “That Obscure Object Of Desire.” Here’s the official synposis:

Painter Youngsoo (Kim Joo-hyuk) hears secondhand that his girlfriend, Minjung (Lee Yoo-young), has recently had (many) drinks with an unknown man. This leads to a quarrel that seems to end their relationship. The next day, Youngsoo sets out in search of her, at the same time that Minjung — or a woman who looks exactly like her and may or may not be her twin — has a series of encounters with strange men, some of whom claim to have met her before . . .  Yourself and Yours is a break-up/make-up comedy unlike any other, suffused with sophisticated modernist mystery.

Get up close and personal with the trailer, and we’ll see what the verdict is from TIFF next month when it makes its World Premiere. And ever prolific, Hong Sang-Soo has also recently shot a new film starring Isabelle Huppert (who he worked with on “In Another Country”) and you can hear more about that in the podcast talk below.
