First Look: ‘True Detective: Night Country’ Starring Jodie Foster Appears In New 2023 HBO Max Teaser

Whatever happened with HBO’s hit series, “True Detective,” you ask? The short version is essentially this. Series creator and writer Nic Pizzolatto essentially parted ways with HBO. He pitched a season four idea, but they didn’t love it, and Pizzolatto moved on to different projects. But as a property that HBO loved and had brought them excellent ratings, acclaim and prestige, they weren’t ready to give it up. Enter producer Barry Jenkins (“Moonlight”) and Mexican filmmaker Issa López (2007’s acclaimed “Tigers Are Not Afraid”), and together they pitched a new take on the anthology crime series.

So, the fourth season, titled “True Detective: Night Country,” is set in the chilly winter nights of Alaska and stars Jodie Foster as a new detective trying to solve a mysterious crime. Jenkins may have co-signed her and brought in a big package, but López is the big creator of the series, acting as the showrunner, the writer, the director of all episodes, and the executive producer.

On top of Foster, the series stars breakout actress Kali Reis (from “Catch the Fair One”) as her partner, plus John Hawkes, Christopher Eccleston, Fiona Shaw, Finn Bennett, Anna Lambe, Aka Niviâna, Isabella Star Lablanc, and Joel D. Montgrand.

Here’s the official synopsis:

When the long winter night falls in Ennis, Alaska, the eight men who operate the Tsalal Arctic Research Station vanish without a trace. To solve the case, detectives Liz Danvers (Jodie Foster) and Evangeline Navarro (Kali Reis) must confront their pasts and the dark truths lying underneath the Arctic ice.

There’s no word on when “True Detective: Night Country” will arrive, and honestly when we put it on our list of the 70 Most Anticipated TV Shows & Mini-Series Of 2023, we were a little worried that we were being premature. But HBO has included it in their new 2023 preview—which also includes new looks at “The Last Of Us,” “Perry Mason” season two, “The Idol” “Succession” season four, “Love & Death” with Elizabeth Olsen, Steven Soderbergh’s “Full Circle,” and a lot of TV series that’s on our anticipated list—and frankly, we’re relieved to hear it’s coming this year. No word on when the series hits, but if production started in November and they’re teasing it already, maybe it’ll be ready for mid-year. Hard to say, but we’re already excited. Take a look below.
