Hey, did you hear? Did you hear? It’s American Film Market week and basically you’re going to have to hear that all week. What does it mean? Essentially it’s an annual film industry trade show event in Santa Monica, California where folks converge to buy and sell distribution rights for completed films or to gain financing for projects in various stages of production.
It’s in full swing, which means you’ll see a lot of online folks that have managed to get inside taking photos of posters or giving us first looks at stills from films in the works we haven’t seen yet. Preamble over, below is the sales/teaser poster for “The Beaver” starring persona non grata, Mel Gibson.
A Summit Entertainment pic and directed by Jodie Foster, “The Beaver” focuses on a depressed man (Gibson) who finds solace in wearing a beaver hand-puppet, which he uses as a tool for communication.
A 2008 Black List topper, “The Beaver” was originally set to be tackled by the director-actor team of Jay Roach and Steve Carell which, quite frankly, seemed on track to be another run-of-the-mill comedy for Carell to complete during his “The Office” off-season.
But with Foster and Mel Gibson on board, plus Gibson’s new-found notoriety (or reblossomed notoriety), the comedy actually has an actor we’d pay to see portray the, from all accounts, dark and twisted lead. This will only be Gibson’s second role since 2006. The maligned actor also starred in Martin Campbell’s “Edge Of Darkness” earlier this year. The film also stars Anton Yelchin and it-girl of the moment and “Winter’s Bone” lead, Jennifer Lawrence.
When are they actually going to unveil “The Beaver”? Well, with controversy-friendly films like “The Hangover 2” deep-sixing a cameo by the actor on moral grounds, we might have to wait deep into 2011 or later before anyone gets an eye on it. Don’t think this sales poster changes much. [ComingSoon]
By the way, the author of this article has to eat his words now that we know it is being released in Feb. That\’s what happens when people don\’t do their research and base articles on their own opinions.
My entire family has been waiting for this movie. We\’ve loved every movie he\’s made. \”persona non grata\” is this supposed movie critique site. If we judged all movies by the actors there would be few I would watch but I will always pay to see a Mel movie.
This sounds like it\’s going to be a great movie. I can\’t wait to see it. Mel has my support. The guy was set up by a grifter.
This movie sounds like one better bring tissues while you will laugh yourself silly. I\’ll be there. Hang tough, hold your tongue, Mel.
I too, like someone seen to have suffered misfortune, might have suffered a similar fate, but for God\’s mercy.
Seems I\’ve been so ready to fight the good fight I\’m over reacting. Sorry cirkusfolk. I jumped on you when I should have read more carefully. I saw your quote and just assumed you were on the attack.
I can\’t wait to see the movie. Don\’t care if Mel Gibson is Mr. \”persona non grata,\” he is an awesome actor and the word is this film could get him another Oscar. Don\’t know why people can\’t put all the B.S. aside and look at the film objectively.
By the way, I don\’t agree that he is persona non grata. He\’ll come back stronger than ever.
cirkusfolk,
why don\’t you go find yourself a life? Haters like you no one needs or likes. Loser.
Can\’t WAIT for this movie. Come on, let it out! This movie is going to rocket.
If the movie gets \”ripped by a pack of critics\” ( and I get it, raped by a pack of…) I could only guess it\’s the movie\’s fault, not his. How and why would any self proclaimed critic allow their perception of an actor\’s personal life to interfere with their enjoyment of a film that actor is in? Marlon Brando was a loon…that didn\’t change how I felt about any of his films or performances.
You can see his beaver in that poster. If the movie gets ripped by a pack of critics, it\’ll be his own fault.
