Got a Tip?

First Look: Rian Johnson’s ‘Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery’ Premieres December 23 On Netflix

Following the success of “Star Wars: The Last Jedi,” filmmaker Rian Johnson wasted no time…doing something else. He had made a new deal with Lucasfilm for a ‘Star Wars’ trilogy, but fandom was such that he decided to take a break and try something else out: a murder mystery in the vein of Agatha Christie, a genre the filmmaker always loved. And thus, 2019’s Academy Award-nominated film, “Knives Out,” was born.

That film did so well that Netflix cut a deal with Johnson to do two more “Knives Out” movies, bringing us to 2022’s “Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery,” which is arriving sometime this fall. ‘Glass Onion’ is the follow-up to “Knives Out.” The film sees Daniel Craig reprising his role as Southern gentleman/detective extraordinaire Benoit Blanc, who travels to Greece to peel back the layers of a mystery involving a new cast of colorful suspects played by Edward Norton, Janelle Monáe, Kathryn Hahn, Leslie Odom Jr., Jessica Henwick, Madelyn Cline with Kate Hudson and Dave Bautista.

In a new Netflix interview with Johnson, the filmmaker says the film’s title pays homage to the 1968 Beatles song of the same name. “I’m always fishing for something fun that Blanc can grab onto as an overwrought metaphor that he can beat to death,” he says. “This is all in plain sight from the very start. So, the idea of glass came to me, something that’s clear. I’ll be very honest. I literally got out my iPhone and searched my music library with the word ‘glass.’ There’s got to be some good glass songs. I was like, “Oh, is it a glass fortress? Is it a glass castle? Is it a glass man?” The first thing that came up, because I’m a huge Beatles fan, is ‘Glass Onion.’”

Here’s the official logline:

In the follow-up to Rian Johnson’s KNIVES OUT, Detective Benoit Blanc travels to Greece to peel back the layers of a mystery involving a new cast of colorful suspects.

“Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery” was written and directed by Rian Johnson, who produced the film alongside his longtime producing partner Ram Bergman under their T-Street banner.

“Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery” will make its festival world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival in September and will close at the BFI London Film Festival in October. ‘Glass Onion’ is now set for a December 23, 2022, premiere date on Netflix.
