While we've seen paparazzi snaps from the set of Ron Howard's Formula 1 racing drama "Rush" — or rather, "epic action drama" if you go by the official synopsis — the film's website has unveiled the first official photos from the film. Written by Peter Morgan ("Hereafter," "The Queen"), "Rush" reteams the "Frost/Nixon" writing directing team for a re-creation of the merciless 1970s Formula 1 rivalry between James Hunt and Niki Lauda, played by "The Avengers" and "Snow White and the Huntsman" star Chris Hemsworth, and Daniel Brühl, known for his turn in Quentin Tarantino's "Inglourious Basterds."
Here's the official synopsis:
The epic action-drama stars Chris Hemsworth (The Avengers) as the charismatic Englishman James Hunt and Daniel Brühl (Inglourious Basterds) as the disciplined Austrian perfectionist Niki Lauda, whose clashes on the Grand Prix racetrack epitomized the contrast between these two extraordinary characters, a distinction reflected in their private lives. Set against the sexy and glamorous golden age of Formula 1 racing, Rush portrays the exhilarating true story of two of the greatest rivals the world has ever witnessed—handsome English playboy Hunt and his methodical, brilliant opponent, Lauda. Taking us into their personal lives on and off the track, Rush follows the two drivers as they push themselves to the breaking point of physical and psychological endurance, where there is no shortcut to victory and no margin for error. If you make one mistake, you die.
"Rush" just received its release date yesterday, which is September 20th, 2013. That kicks it out of the 2012 Oscar race, obviously, but places it in contention for a premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival next year. The picture also co-stars Olivia Wilde, Alexandra Maria Lara, Christian McKay and "Game of Thrones" star Natalie Dormer. [via "Rush" official site]
I had been hearing a lot about this movie and how incredible and inspirational Lauda was/is. I started researching him at work and honestly tears came to my eyes. I kinda' want to get Niki's biography (at amazon for $5.95) and make my patients that talk about pain and how they won't recover from a joint replacement… Just to remind them… I want to do that with "Up" too. This looks interesting. And if anything it will get people talking about going out 6 weeks after a horrible accident and getting back in that car. Amazing.
This film isn't really about F1 racing in all honesty. It's about the rivalry between Niki Lauda and James Hunt, and essentially James Hunts decline and "wild boy" persona.
@timmaexvx, Everything about your comment is just so horribly wrong.
F1 is going through one of the most exciting seasons in well over a decade which is generating huge interest in the sport, not to mention the fact that from next year onwards there will be atleast 1 US grand prix which will only add to the enthusiasm for the movie.
The movie won't be a $100million grosser in America but internationally it will be a huge hit.
Again it's hillarious that you think an industry that generates over $4 billion a year has no interest.
I still don't understand why anyone greenlit this film. Even in europe no one cares about Formula 1 anymore.
And in Germany and Austria Nikki Lauda is nothing but punch line. He's been a F1 commenter on television for about 10 years and he's an absolute moron. Nobody around here would ever be able to take him serious in this film. Casting Daniel Brühl, the german definition of mediocrity, only makes it worse.
