All it takes is one little film to bust down a taboo, and so it's seemingly been done with Steve McQueen's "Shame." The critically-acclaimed drama was a rare picture to tackle the question of sex addiction, and while it hasn't quite opened the floodgates, it's made it easier for other filmmakers to tackle the subject matter. For one, Gary Oldman says he's got a project revolving around the condition that he might direct. And for another, there's "Thanks For Sharing," which marks the directorial debut of Stuart Blumberg, the Oscar-nominated co-writer of Lisa Cholodenko's "The Kids Are All Right."
Blumberg's taking a somewhat lighter tone to the subject matter than McQueen did with his comedy-drama, which stars Mark Ruffalo, Tim Robbins and "Book of Mormon" star Josh Gad as a trio of sex addicts. The first images from the film have arrived via backers Voltage Pictures, and they also provide a look at some of the supporting cast, most notably Gwyneth Paltrow, who plays a woman that Ruffalo's trying to have a relationship with, "Almost Famous" star Patrick Fugit, and pop star Pink. The film's been in the can for a while, and while there's no firm release date, we'd put good money on seeing the film at TIFF or another fall festival.
From the Academy Award nominated writer of The Kids are All Right, Thanks for Sharing is a touching and unpredictable comedy that follows three sex addicts as they struggle to function in society while maintaining meaningful relationships. Along the way, Adam (Ruffalo) attempts to forge a relationship with Phoebe(Paltrow), a wildly independent and beautiful woman who has sworn off dating addicts after breaking up with an alcoholic. Mike (Robbins) is married to his high school sweetheart, but becomes as addicted to his 12 step recovery program as he does to sex. Neil(Gad), on the other hand, hides a camera on his tennis shoe to secretly film up women's skirts – all while trying to convince his friends that he can live a life without sex. Throughout the film, they each deal with their addictions in different and hilarious ways in this unusual and sweet comedy.
