Following his 2014 breakthrough film “Mommy” — yes, even bigger than the various career breakthrough films he’s made — French Canadian wunderkind Xavier Dolan was all set to make his first English-Language effort with big Hollywood names. Jessica Chastain and “Game Of Thrones” star Kit Harington were to front “The Death and Life of John F. Donovan.”
But apparently Dolan was secretly concocting multiple plans. Suddenly, and out of nowhere, he announced a new project that was coming first and was fully cast: “It’s Only The End Of The World” starring Marion Cotillard, Léa Seydoux, Vincent Cassel, and more.
Production began at the end of May, just after Dolan was finished with his duties on the Cannes Film Festival jury, and the first image from the production has arrived. Presumably, this means we’re going to have a new Dolan film ready for 2016, perhaps even for Cannes, but at any rate, the first pic of Marion Cotillard is below.
Inspired by Jean-Luc Lagarce‘s play, “It’s Only The End Of The World” focuses on a writer who returns home after a twelve-year absence to announce his impending death, and the reunion with his family that follows. We can’t wait to see more from this one.
Bonus: Here’s a 1 hour FSLC/The Close Up conversation with Xavier Dolan
"Gaspard Ulliel plays the main character in Juste la fin du monde."
Exactly! I was going to say the same! it was rude not to include him in the article.
You forgot to mention Gaspard Ulliel and Nathalie Baye in the cast. They might be less famous but in French territory they\’re quite big. Can\’t wait to watch this next year, possibly at Cannes!
Cannot wait!
Gaspard Ulliel plays the main character in Juste la fin du monde. Not including his name here smells a little bit like sloppy research even though he may be the least famous one in the cast.
damn quebec is producing some fine talent
Xavier Dolan, Denis Villeneuve & Jean-Marc Vallée are no sell-out, they\’re embracing the means they deserves. Selling out around here would equate to take the maximum government subventions and make a crowd pleasing turd of a movie that no one would see. Either that or direct local tv series.
"Following his 2014 breakthrough film-yes, even bigger than the various career breakthrough films" GREAT sum-up… people have been trying to push Dolan\’s alleged breakthrough-movies, but it\’s just not working. The irony is that now that he has everybody and their agents licking his boot, his so called fans will probably say he is selling-out.
