First Look: ‘The Kids Are Alright’ & ‘The Romantics’ Added To Sundance

Catching up on the catching up. Sundance has announced three last minute additions to their lineup. Sundance Director John Cooper explains their game time decision.

“When the opportunity to screen the latest films from three extremely innovative storytellers presented itself, we knew we could not deny our audiences. As an added bonus, all three are alumni of the Festival, so we are thrilled to be able to support them returning to Sundance with their newest work.”

The first addition is “It’s A Wonderful Afterlife,” from Kenyan/British director Gurinder Chadha (“Bend It Like Beckham,” “Bride & Prejudice”) and starring Sally Hawkins. ‘Afterlife’ is a horror/comedy about, “an Indian mother who takes her obsession with marriage into the world of serial murder.” Next is the rom-com “The Romantics” starring Anna Paquin, Katie Holmes, Malin Akerman, Adam Brody, Elijah Wood, and Josh Duhamel (another first look to your right). Possibly not our cup o’ tea but we’ll see how Sundance audiences react as that is a very decent cast.

Lastly (and most important in our book), comes Lisa Cholodenko’s “The Kids Are All Right” starring Julianne Moore, Annette Bening, and Mark Ruffalo. Moore and Bening play lesbian parents whose two children ‘(played by Josh Hutcherson and Mia Wasikowska who plays Alice in Tim Burton‘s upcoming “Alice In Wonderland“) set out to find their sperm donor father (Ruffalo) and turn their family upside down in the process. Above is your first look from the film. Not to toot our own horn here but awhile back we predicted (toot toot) that this might debut at Sundance and we are pleased to be proven correct on this one since ‘Kids’ should fit in nicely to this year’s lineup. Though better late then never, right?
