Last year we lost one of the greats, with the sudden passing of James Gandolfini. But lucky for us, he still had a couple movies coming that demonstrated he was an actor who had so much more to explore. Last fall he showed a charmingly softer, gentler side in the underrated “Enough Said” and this fall he hits the hard streets of Boston in “The Drop.” If you haven’t heard of it, you may remember it under its former title “Animal Rescue,” but either way, it’s coming and a batch of new stills has arrived to give a bit of taste.
The cast and talent for this one are great, with Tom Hardy, Noomi Rapace and Matthias Schoenaerts all featuring in the Michael Roskam (“Bullhead“) directed movie about an ex-con, working at a bar and trying to go straight with a girlfriend and a rescued pit bull, only to have it go awry thanks to a robbery gone wrong. The title refers to the bar, which serves as a “drop” point for gangsters doing their financial transactions. And with a script from Dennis Lehane, based on his own short story, this is one that has all the hallmarks of being something potentially really good.
“I think we were ready for a new Gandolfini chapter,” Roskam reflected to USA Today. “He was a little older. And he had the gray hair and the beard. A new Gandolfini was emerging. Unfortunately, we are not going to be able to see more of it. But I am happy that we had this beautiful glimpse.”
“The Drop” opens on September 19th. Check out the pics below. Update 4/1: New trailer has arrived, watch it here or watch below.
Can't wait for this one. Very interesting cast; i'm in!
I'm very excited about this film. Hardy, Gandolfini together. So sad it seemed to be their last chance. I think both guys will show great chemistry on the white screen. Roskam told there was an immediate click between Tom and James, which in a way doesn't surprise me. Really want to check it out!
Shure miss the guy
Bullhead was fantastic – looking forward to this one.
I totally understand the quote about another age if Gandolfini starting. I could see him easing into roles like Gene Hackman did once he reached a certain age. Too bad.
