With post-production now underway, and the filming having taken place early this winter, the question is whether or not we’ll see “Suffragette” completed in time for the fall festival circuit or if it’ll be held for next year. Those decisions are likely being made right now, but until we know more, the first image from the movie has arrived to give a hint at what’s coming.
The “Brick Lane” team of writer Abi Morgan and director Sarah Gavron reunite here for the Carey Mulligan-led tale centered on the early feminist movement in the U.K., and the women who became radicalized. Helena Bonham Carter, Anne-Marie Duff, Meryl Streep, Brendan Gleeson and Ben Whishaw also feature in this, which now has an official synopsis. Read on:
SUFFRAGETTE is a thrilling drama that tracks the story of the foot soldiers of the early feminist movement, women who were forced underground to pursue a dangerous game of cat and mouse with an increasingly brutal State. These women were not primarily from the genteel educated classes, they were working women who had seen peaceful protest achieve nothing. Radicalized and turning to violence as the only route to change, they were willing to lose everything in their fight for equality – their jobs, their homes, their children and their lives. MAUD was one such foot soldier. The story of her fight for dignity is as gripping and visceral as any thriller, it is also heart-breaking and inspirational.
No U.S. release date or distributor just yet, but those deals are likely on the horizon.
Love Helena Bonham Carter! Definitely going to see it!
Meryl's in it ?? Good enough for me
Mulligan is a wonderful actress. That said, I'll definitely check this out.
