“He’s a rebooted Mad Max, but it’s a new interpretation.” George Miller told us in 2011 about Tom Hardy playing the new anti-hero maverick of the wasteland. “We made it very clear from the outset that it would be crazy to try to impersonate what Mel Gibson had done, but Tom [like] Mel and Heath Ledger; these guys all have very similar kind of maleness, I find. I don’t know, they somehow remind me of big cats—they’re mesmerizing to look and be with, but you don’t know what they’re going to do at any moment.”
And yes, that was a long time ago, but in that same interview Miller told us the story for "Mad Max: Fury Road" was essentially the same core story he came up with in 2003 (when a proper "Mad Max 4" almost shot). It’s been a long and winding road for the film, conceived as a new trilogy and franchise, with the film receiving its 2015 release date, three years after it started shooting. It’s a production that’s almost been veiled in secrecy and for something that shot almost several years ago, it’s almost shocking how few elements or even story bits have been revealed (and that’s possibly because the production started with drama, evidently a lot bigger drama that was reported too, fyi).
Either way, a new, pretty badass image of Hardy as Mad Max alongside a head shaven Charlize Theron has emerged thanks to EW. And Miller is promising nothing short of a white knuckle ride. “I wanted to tell a linear story–a chase that starts as the movie begins and continues for 110 minutes,” he said, with the movie apparently featuring very little digital effects and minimal dialogue. “In this crucible of very intense action, the characters are revealed.” A tricky act to pull off, but we dig the ambition.
Co-starring Nicholas Hoult, Zoe Kravitz, Riley Keough, and Rosie Huntington-Whiteley "Mad Max: Fury Road" is due in theaters May 15, 2015. More photos from EW have hit too, plus anew longform synopsis.
MAD MAX: FURY ROAD is the fourth film of George Miller‘s Road Warrior/Mad Max franchise co-written and directed by Miller. The post-apocalyptic action film is set in the furthest reaches of our planet, in a stark desert landscape where humanity is broken, and most everyone is crazed fighting for the necessities of life.
Within this world of fire and blood exist two rebels on the run who just might be able to restore order… There’s Max (played by TOM HARDY from The Dark Knight Rises), a man of action and a man of few words, who seeks peace of mind following the loss of his wife and child in the aftermath of the chaos. And… Furiosa (played by CHARLIZE THERON from Prometheus), a woman of action and a woman who believes her path to survival may be achieved if she can make it across the desert back to her childhood homeland.
I would have preferred Sam Worthington as the lead.
I also expect some continuity with the orginal films. Flashbacks to the first film would be enough.
Just bring back the falcon coupe that is mad max from the start
I hope we see the return of an older metal boomerang thrower that re-appeared through out movies 2 and 3 that saved his backside.
No. Just no.
I CANNOT WAIT FOR THIS MOVIE!!!!
Mad Max = loner = no need for a female co-star. No matter how hot she is.
My favorite Max is the first real Max when he discovers his life is still going on with pain and love…please don't ever take that Max away..
It's the Road Warrior + Beyond Thunderdome, apparently.
I'm not going to see this. Mel is not in it.
You sure this isn't Boarderlands 3!?
Slightly off-topic – does anyone else LOATHE the little "funny" comments that have started popping up on pictures at EW? I just noticed them a few weeks ago. In the cover above, it's the little comment "farewell to arm" pointing at Charlize Theron.
Please, EW, leave the snark to gossip rags and the Bullseye page.
Is the "Screw Loose" (the silent, reclusive kid from MM3- Beyond Thunderdome) in the 3d pic?
Anything with Tom Hardy is good, watch his other work and you'll all have faith in this one. I think it looks awesome!!
Why put Charlize Theron in a movie and shave her head? If she's not hot, I'm not interested.
Image looks good to me. The two leads are terrific actors so i'm stoked to see what they achieved with their roles. At least George Miller was there to direct this film.
Utter Fail.
Victard did you get anal rapu at a anime convention?
1.) The images above look like a 're-do' of MM:TRW, with the bodies on the vehicles, etc.
2.) I lost a lot of 'faith' in the franchise when they included the same actor who portrayed 'The Auto-Gyro Captain', but didn't make him the same character, in 'MM:BT' (Bruce Spence).
I have no problem with someone else playing Max, but they could have made it about the young ferel kid from Road Warrior
What a poorly worded article. It's hard to take you and your opinion seriously when it reads as thought it were written by a child. You used "almost" 4 times in one paragraph. Please try to use a thesaurus as to avoid this happening again.
At last it is going to happen! I'm curious to see what this will bring us. Great image i must say.
Should have had Mel Gibson as Max or no sequels. This is only appealing to the people who cosplay and frequently uses the words "sick" and "badass".
YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS, FINALLY.
i see no reason to reboot. simply tell the story of other characters. for my part, i fail to find the appeal of reboots. the mad max world is so full of interesting characters, why retell the story of an already established character? well, i guess money's the root of all reboots…
I need this..
Both totally badass. I cant wait this long 🙁
This is what i LIKE! It can't come soon enough for me.
