Got a Tip?

First Look At Michael Mann’s Horse Racing HBO Drama Series ‘Luck’ Starring Dustin Hoffman

Yeah, yeah, you know the drill by now. HBO is home of yadda yadda projects that typically aren’t the yadda yadda of major studios or networks. Basically, their lineup keeps getting stronger and stronger, attracting some of the biggest names in the business and Michael Mann‘s forthcoming horse racing drama series “Luck” should be another winner.

The project boasts a ridiculously stacked lineup of stars leading with Dustin Hoffman as the ex-con gambler, Ace Bernstein, and he’s surrounded by some great names. Michael Gambon—who previously collaborated with Mann on “The Insider”—is set to play a yet-to-be-named, recurring character described as a nemesis/worthy adversary for Hoffman’s Bernstein character; Dennis Farina plays Ace’s right-hand man; Nick Nolte is a former famous trainer named The Old Man; John Ortiz plays a Peruvian trainer with a seedy reputation known as ‘Escalante’; Joan Allen plays a woman who runs a prison program that uses inmates to care for broken-down racehorses; Richard Kind is a forty-something jockey’s agent; Ian Hart is a loudmouth gambler who runs into some cash; Kevin Dunn plays the misanthropic ringmaster of a syndicate of misfits; Kerry Condon‘s role is that of an exercise rider for one of The Old Man’s horses; Tom Payne plays an apprentice rider being eyed for recruitment by Condon and lastly Patrick J. Adams plays a mysterious character who works closely with Bernstein. Whew.

We don’t even give a shit about horse racing to be honest, but we’ll be damned if this behind-the-scenes peek hasn’t already got us excited. “Luck” will premiere in late 2011/early 2012.

  1. Can\’t wait to see it! Finally a series about horse racing instead of cops and robbers. Something different. I loved all the Dick Francis books with all the insights into this sport. Hooray for originality.

  2. I\’ve always wanted to see Dustin Hoffman and Philip Seymour Hoffman do a movie together so that we would finally see the two greatest Hoffmans of all time together on screen. They are both incredible actors and it would be amazing to see them bounce off each other in a film.
