Got a Tip?

First Look At Jennifer Lawrence & Bradley Cooper In Susanne Bier’s Depression-Era Drama ‘Serena’

nullIt seems that Jennifer Lawrence can't get out of the woods. She made her name with a breakthrough performance in the Southern Gothic tinged "Winter's Bone," and is currently hunting children to the tune of major box office dollars in "The Hunger Games." And before she heads back to Panem, she's gonna get one non-blockbuster effort in the can.

Lensing has started on the Depression-era drama "Serena" with Susanne Bier at the helm, and a first look at Lawrence and her co-star Bradley Cooper has emerged. This is what they look like in old-timey clothes, and yeah, they look pretty damn good. Based on the novel by Ron Rash, the story centers on a man named George Pemberton (Cooper) and his new bride, Serena (Lawrence), as they set out to depression-era North Carolina to create a timber empire. Their successful, ruthless reign in the mountains becomes complicated when Serena discovers her inability to bear children, setting her on a vengeful path against George's illegitimate son. So yeah, pretty gritty fare. Fun fact: Darren Aronofsky and Angelina Jolie were once circling this, but that never came to pass.

Production is underway in Prague and while we wait for this, Bier has one movie already finished, the Pierce Brosnan led dramedy "All You Need Is Love" which we presume will pop up on the festival circuit later this year. [Collider]

  1. Actually, Serena is upposed to be 27, and Jennifer Lawrence is 21 so, that's not a stretch for Lawrence. Angelina Jolie is 36 and looks it. I'm looking forward to Jennifer Lawrence in this role more than I would have with Jolie; we have seen Angelina as "vengeful and angry" but for Jennifer (an amazing actress) it's a different kind of role for her to play.

  2. Angelina would have been better; she can pull off vengeful and angry. Plus, jennifer Lawrence more like Bradley Cooper's character's daughter, rather than his wife.

  3. They make a goodlooking couple. The costumers really nailed the period. Jennifer has that resolute stare going on…she'll nail this role as usual. Yeah, I'll go see this; the story sounds very interesting and the cast looks great.
