Dystopian future? Tweenangers in peril? Yes, it’s yet another YA book series turned movie turned hopeful franchise. It seems everyone in Hollywood wants their own “Twilight,” but it’s a big gamble…for every “The Hunger Games,” there’s a “Beautiful Creatures” lying wounded on the side of the road. Now, another contender is hoping to hit the big time.
“The Maze Runner,” based on the book by James Dasher — who has also published two sequels and a prequel, naturally — stars “Teen Wolf” lead Dylan O’Brien and “Skins” and “Wuthering Heights” thesp Kaya Scodelario, and tells the story of Thomas, a teen who wakes up with amnesia and soon finds himself in a completely closed environment called the Glade. There he finds around 60 other teen boys who have been trying to escape from the enclosure for two years through a surrounding maze. Things change drastically when a comatose girl arrives with a strange note.
So yeah, another bleak future is on hand, but will this one have the magic to reach beyond its fanbase to the public at large? You’ll find out next Valentine’s Day but until then, here are the first images. [MTV]
