For years, Michael Mann has been trying to make his “Ferrari” biopic. Back in 2015, the film seemed on the right track with Christian Bale in the lead role. That didn’t end up happening and a couple of years later, Hugh Jackman and Noomi Rapace were set to star. That has apparently fallen apart, but the third time is the charm, right?
According to Deadline, Michael Mann has teamed up with STXfilms for his new drama, “Ferrari.” And for this iteration of the project, the filmmaker has brought on Adam Driver, Penélope Cruz, and Shailene Woodley to lead the cast. The film, as the title suggests, follows the true story of Enzo Ferrari in 1957 as he attempts to save his car business. Through all the drama and impending bankruptcy, he puts it all on the line for one more race. Mann is directing the project, which he also co-wrote alongside Troy Kennedy Martin.
“Being able to have these wonderfully talented artists, actors Adam Driver, Penélope Cruz, and Shailene Woodley, bring to life these unique characters on location in Modena and the Emilia-Romagna is a vision fulfilled,” said Mann.
Adam Fogelson, Chairman of STXfilms Motion Picture Group added, “‘Ferrari’ is so much more than a story about a man and his machine. It is an extraordinary and emotional story that Michael has been developing for years and the entire team at STX is looking forward to the start of production with this dream cast and filmmaker. Adam Driver is one of the most talented and fascinating actors working today, and we could not be more thrilled to pair him with Penélope, whose legendary career builds with every role she takes.”
Mann is a legendary filmmaker, who many will know as the director of “Heat” (and author of the upcoming sequel novel). He also has the upcoming HBO series, “Tokyo Vice,” on the horizon, which stars Ansel Elgort and is set to debut later this year.
A release date for “Ferrari” has yet to be revealed. However, the film is hoping to begin production this May in Italy, so perhaps we’ll see the feature sometime in 2023.
