If you’re a “Star Wars” fan and frequent social media, you’re probably well aware that the upcoming untitled “Star Wars” live-action TV series is currently in production. However, we have yet to hear any official word on the setting, cast, crew, or plot for the series, outside of Jon Favreau is spearheading the whole thing for Disney/Lucasfilm. Well, with some new reports surfacing, it looks like we have a good idea of a few of the names directing the series, as well as where we can expect portions of the series to take place.
According to Making Star Wars and Discussing Film, Jon Favreau, Dave Filoni, and Alan Taylor are all aboard to direct episodes of the live-action series. Favreau is a given, as he’s had quite the directing career, helming “Iron Man (1 & 2),” “The Jungle Book,” and the upcoming “The Lion King.” Taylor also has some directing credentials to his name, albeit with mixed results. He’s directed some of the best, early episodes of “Game of Thrones,” but more recently was behind “Terminator: Genisys” and “Thor: The Dark World,” which are…not great.
But the big news is Filoni. For those that stick to the “Star Wars” films, Filoni’s name probably doesn’t ring any bells. He’s been the driving force behind the franchise’s animated offerings and has carved out a place in the hearts of many “Star Wars” fans for his work there. Many were actually hoping that his name would be brought up if Kathleen Kennedy were ever to step down from Lucasfilm, as Filoni has proven himself to have a great grasp on the characters and universe. So, having him attached at all to the live-action series is nothing but a win for “Star Wars.”
Now, the reports do differ in one key area. Both agree that Favreau, Filoni, and Taylor are aboard to helm multiple episodes in the 8-episode first season. However, it’s still TBD to see if Filoni or Favreau will be behind the camera for the first episode.
One thing that seems to be confirmed is the setting of the series. Set reports and rumors have confirmed that the live-action series will take place on Mandalore. And further, the series will focus on the Mandalorians post-‘Return of the Jedi.’ Even if the planet and species aren’t immediately known to most fans, they’ll probably remember Boba Fett, who is the most popular and well-known Mandalorian in the series.
No word yet on a release date, but then again, we have no idea when the Disney streaming service (which will release the series) will even launch. But hey, it looks like we have some much-needed good news in the “Star Wars” universe.
