The Immigrant

With superheroes and special effects getting set to fly at your face for the next few months, you might be craving something of careful craft, rich substance and compelling drama. And frankly, you will have few better options than James Gray‘s “The Immigrant.” And to get you ready for the film, today we have the exclusive debut of a brand new clip from the film.

Joaquin Phoenix, Marion Cotillard and Jeremy Renner lead the movie, set against the backdrop of early 1900s New York City, following the journey of Ewa, a Polish immigrant to the United States. When her sister falls ill, Ewa is desperate for help, and falls into the clutches of Bruno, who forces her into prostitution. But Ewa’s salvation may lie in Orlando, a magician, and Bruno’s cousin, who could be her way to a better life. And in this clip, you can see Bruno already playing on Ewa’s hopeless situation, as she begs for help.

Featuring strong performances across the board, and great work from Gray behind the camera, but sure to track this down when it opens on May 16th. And if you’re in New York City, you can catch an advance screening at BAM on Monday, May 5th at 9:30 PM. We’ll be moderating a Q&A with James Gray following the screening. Check out the clip below along with some new images from the film.

  1. My God, just give her the Oscar right now!!! Anyone who has a brain and watches this clip can see why she should earn the Oscar for Best Actress In A Leading Role at the Oscars 2015. Not only has she given the greatest female performance of all time in "La vie en rose", not only was she worthy of an Oscar win for pretty much everything she has done since, but also this year she gives a phenomenal performance in an uncommonly trashy role for her in "Blood ties" and clearly a tour de force of a performance in James Gray's "The Immigrant". And I can't wait for Dardenne Brothers' "Two days, one night". If there's any justice in the world we live in, Marion Cotillard should win the Oscar for another towering performance in "The Immigrant". She was robbed for "Rust and Bone", "Nine" and "Inception". He work in "The Immigrant" is beyond spectacular. It's the kind of performance that deserves to be counted among some of the greatest film acting ever put on screen.
