Is there a televised award that means less to people in Hollywood than a Golden Globe? The People’s Choice Award, sure, but that at least has fan voting behind it. The “and I’m telling you I’m not going” award is the Critics Choice Awards which barely kept its deal with The CW to air the 2023 proceedings. This year’s big “winners”? “Everything Everywhere All At Once,” “Better Call Saul” and “Abbott Elementary”

The A24 release took five awards including Best Picture, Best Director (The Daniels), Original Screenplay (The Daniels), Supporting Actor (Ke Huy Quan ) and Editing. The mini-major also won Best Actor for Brendan Fraiser in “The Whale.” Best Actress went to Cate Blanchett for “TAR” while Angela Bassett won Best Supporting Actress for “Black Panther Wakanda: Forever.”
In 2022, “The Power of the Dog” won the Critics Choice Award for Best Picture only to see “CODA” win the PGA Award and SAG Ensemble honor en route to the Oscar for Best Picture. Hmmm. I wonder which organization is more indicative of AMPAS members? Ponder.
On the television side, “Better Call Saul” took Best Drama Series and Best Actor in a Drama Series (Bob Odenkirk) for its final season. “Abbott Elementary” won Best Comedy Series and Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series (Sheryl Lee Ralph). “The Dropout” won Best Limited Series while its star, Amanda Seyfried, took another Actress in a Limited Series honor.
Unfortunately, COVID reared its ugly head once again as nominees Colin Farrell, Brendan Gleeson, Michelle Pfeiffer, and Jamie Lee Curtis, among others, all tested positive and were unable to attend.
