Got a Tip?

Even Ray Manzarek Thought Oliver Stone’s ‘The Doors’ Sucked Ass Too

With The Doors 41st anniversary on the horizon, Ray Manzarek, the brainy curator of the groovy and psychedelic L.A. rock band from the late ’60s, has announced that plans for an untitled documentary that will chronicle the group’s career is underway.

And just like you, he’s still scarred from Oliver Stone’s hilarious 1991 unintentional comedy, “The Doors” starring Val Kilmer as Jim Morrison (though let’s be real, Val ain’t the reason this movie is terrible; Val rules).

“This is the anti-Oliver Stone [Doors],” Manzarek told Billboard. “This will be the true story of the Doors.”

Aw, c’mon Ray. You didn’t like to see yourself played by Kyle McLaughlan as the nerdy and articulate member of the band? We were pretty impressed with his hairdo.

I saw the first cut of it yesterday, and it’s looking real good. But that won’t be out ’til another six months,” the erudite acid-rock keyboardist said.

Manzarek said the doc will feature tons of rare footage and we hope by rare he doesn’t mean concert shots of the twelve people that went to go see Ian Astbury stand-in with the band.

He also has four scripts in the works and of course, they’re all about the Doors. “I’ve got a film script based on [the song] ‘L.A. Woman,’ and another one in which three UCLA film school guys go to the desert to take peyote with the Native Americans at the Native American Church – out in the desert, rednecks, psychic visions and reincarnation visions.”

So basically it’s like the knee-slapping peyote scene in Stone’s “The Doors” only for two hours. But even Manzarek knows what time it is. “Who doesn’t have four scripts?,” he laughed self-deprecatingly. Amen, brother, amen (and break on through while you’re at it).

  1. Stone’s movie sucked so bad I have to purge my mind of its comically sad fictitious portrayal after looking at it. I LOVE The Doors, and hopefully Ray can get together an awesome Doc or maybe even a NEW film/MOVIE about The Doors with the right actors, the right script, the right… well, the right everything!
