Got a Tip?

HBO Confirms “Special COVID Episode” Of ‘Euphoria’ To Bridge The Extended Gap Between Seasons

Perhaps the biggest surprise of last night’s Emmy Awards was the win by Zendaya in the Best Actress in a Drama Series category. In a category that was stacked, the young actress was able to give HBO yet another Emmy win and draw interest to her teen drama series “Euphoria.” And as you might expect, this is now making people wonder when they might see the further adventures of Rue on the small screen. Well, there’s good news and bad news.

The good news is that HBO executive Casey Bloys confirmed last night (via Deadline) that new “Euphoria” content is coming fairly soon. However, that doesn’t mean Season 2 is around the corner. In fact, Season 2 isn’t set to begin filming until early 2021. But to help keep people interested in the Emmy Award-winning series, HBO has a trick up its sleeve.

Bloys confirmed that the network has plans for a “special COVID episode” of the acclaimed drama series. What that episode might look like is still unknown, as we’ve seen a number of series try to do “COVID episodes” before, with many taking the form of Zoom calls.

With social media playing such a large part of the teen drama series, there’s a number of ways the network could go with a special bridge episode between seasons. Perhaps there’s a “Searching”-esque Screenlife episode where the characters all communicate over a phone and/or laptop screen? Or just take the easy way out and limit the number of cast members and do a smaller-scale episode to keep people interested until Season 2 can arrive.

This isn’t the first time we’ve heard about a COVID-inspired episode of “Euphoria.” Back in August, Zendaya was being interviewed by Ben Platt when he guest-hosted “Jimmy Kimmel Live.” And during that interview, she dropped hints about the possibility of a “bridge episode” between seasons. Of course, she didn’t explain what that might look like.

So, as of now, all we know is that more “Euphoria” is on the way, even if it is only one episode. And if you’re waiting for Season 2, that likely isn’t coming until the last half of 2021, at the earliest.
