It’s not controversial to say that, by and large, rom-coms are formulaic. You are introduced to the protagonist, who is cute and adorable but unlucky at love. They have a meet-cute. They fall in love. Something bad happens. They come back together just in time for the ending. But the new rom-com (if you can even really call it that), “Eternal Beauty,” is a bit…different.
Yes, there is a hapless woman that is unlucky at love. Sure, she meets a dashing man that makes her feel things she didn’t think was possible. But Jane isn’t your typical Jennifer Aniston type and her beau is no Ryan Reynolds. They’re both very damaged people that are socially awkward, perhaps even a bit unstable, that come together in very humorous and, ultimately, touching ways. It’s sweet and funny and about as un-rom-com a rom-com can be.
The cast for the film includes Oscar-winning actress Sally Hawkins, David Thewlis, Alice Lowe, Billie Piper, and Penelope Wilton. The film is directed by actor-turned-filmmaker Craig Roberts. He previously helmed the feature, “Just Jim,” from 2015. As mentioned, in addition to his directorial credits, Roberts is an accomplished actor who has appeared in a number of projects including “Tolkien,” “The Fundamentals of Caring,” “Submarine,” and the criminally underrated TV series, “Red Oaks.”
“Eternal Beauty” arrives on VOD on October 2. You can watch the first trailer for the film below.
Here’s the synopsis:
When Jane (Sally Hawkins) is dumped at the altar she has a breakdown and spirals into a chaotic world, where love (both real and imagined) and family relationships collide with both touching and humorous consequences.
