Riz Ahmed‘s star began its ascent with breakout roles in 2014’s “Nightcrawler” and the 2016 HBO miniseries “The Night Of.” Now, fresh off his second Golden Globe nomination and first Oscar nom for last year’s “The Sound Of Metal,” Ahmed is a full-fledged A-lister.

Now, Ahmed looks to continue his success with another intense character study from Amazon Studios. “Encounter,” the latest film from Michael Pearce, follows Ahmed as a marine veteran who takes his two sons on the run to protect them from an imminent alien invasion. Is there more going on than meets the eye, however?
Here’s the film’s official synopsis:
A decorated Marine goes on a rescue mission to save his two young sons from a mysterious threat. As their journey takes them in increasingly dangerous directions, the boys will need to leave their childhoods behind.
Alongside Ahmed, the film also stars Octavia Spencer, Rory Cochrane, Lucian-River Chouhan, and Aditya Geddada.
“Encounter” is Pearce’s latest film since 2017’s “Beast,” a movie that received near-unanimous critical acclaim for its slow-burn twists and compelling performances from Jessie Buckley and Johnny Flynn.
Will Pearce follow up “Beast” with another winner? Reviews have been tepid since its world premiere at Telluride in September (read our review of it here). “Encounter” has a limited theatrical release on December 3 before it’s available to stream on Amazon Prime a week later, on December 10.
