Last year was like a big coming out party for Elle Fanning. The actress gave impressive performances in films as disparate as J.J. Abrams’s “Super 8,” Cameron Crowe's "We Bought A Zoo" and Francis Ford Coppola's "Twixt," with all of these following her breakout turn in Sofia Coppola’s “Somewhere” the year before. So it’s no wonder that her profile is continuing to rise, and Deadline reports that Fanning will star in the young adult novel adaptation “Olive’s Ocean.”
The film, based on Kevin Henkes’ Newbery Honor award-winning novel, centers on the titular character “who goes on a summer of soul searching after discovering that a classmate who recently died in a tragic accident had secretly hoped to become her friend.” As far as we know, this young adult book doesn't involve vampires, werewolves or being forced to hunt others your age for sport. In short, it sounds pretty promising.
The project’s inception apparently took place on the set of "Effie," a film starring Fanning’s sister, after she was asked by the producer what her favorite book was. Christina Hammonds Reed will write the screenplay and the production will have an estimated budget of $11 million, but there are no reports of any directors being approached yet.
