Got a Tip?

Elizabeth Banks Wanted To Pitch Marvel For ‘Thor: Ragnarok’ But No One Called Her Back

Elizabeth Banks is still relatively new to the filmmaking game. Since her directorial debut in 2015 (“Pitch Perfect 2”), she’s only released one other film, 2019’s “Charlie’s Angels.” And she’s on the cusp of releasing her third feature, “Cocaine Bear.” But if she had her way, there might have been one more film on that list, and it would have been the biggest project of her career to date.

Speaking to Variety, while promoting the upcoming horror-comedy, “Cocaine Bear,” Elizabeth Banks revealed that she flirted with the idea of directing “Thor: Ragnarok” for Marvel Studios. And by flirted, I mean she definitely was interested in the idea, but there were no official talks. But still, it would have been pretty wild to see Banks jump from “Pitch Perfect 2” to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. She said she was “really interested” in meeting with Marvel to pitch her version of “Thor: Ragnarok.” However, for whatever reason, the meeting never took place and Marvel went with a different filmmaker’s vision.

“And nothing ever happened,” Banks explained. She believes “a call was made” but “no one called me [back],” she added. “Taika Waititi got the job. Rightfully so.”

It would appear that the same reason Waititi’s tone and comedic chops worked with the ‘Thor’ franchise is the exact reason why Banks was drawn to the idea of working on the character.

“I have an attraction to the sensibility,” she said. “That character being funny and knowing how good Chris [Hemsworth] is at making fun of himself, that’s my vibe.”

As for any potential superhero films in the future, Banks seems to be content with not dabbling in the genre for now. However, she did talk about a pitch she has for a “Catwoman” film, but she’s unsure if it fits with the current DC Studios plans, as were laid out recently by co-CEOs James Gunn and Peter Safran.

“I had a pitch for a ‘Catwoman’ movie a while ago, but I don’t think it’ll fit into the mandate right now,” Banks teased. “But maybe someday.”

For now, we’ll just have to be happy for a Banks film about a cocaine-addicted bear running rampant through the woods. And you know what, that might just be good enough.
