Got a Tip?

‘Edge Of Tomorrow’ Sequel Gets A Familiar Title, Emily Blunt Returns

It seemed at one point that Warner Bros. didn’t really love the title of the Doug Liman-directed, Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt-starring sci-fi actioner “Edge Of Tomorrow,” a film that did okay but not amazing business at the box office (just $100 million at the domestic box office, better abroad with $270 million). When the film hit DVD, VOD and streaming channels, the words “Live Die Repeat” were splashed all over the marketing and “Edge Of Tomorrow” was in much tinier letters. Had they changed the title for the home-video release? The studio insisted they hadn’t.

Well, maybe they actually did subtly, as the newly announced title of the film is an exact riff of that VOD moniker.

“We have an amazing story! It’s incredible! Way better than the first film, and I obviously loved the first film,” Doug Liman told Collider while promoting his new film “The Wall.” “It will be called ‘Live Die Repeat And Repeat.’ Tom [Cruise] is excited about it, and Emily Blunt is excited about it. The big question is just when we’ll do it. But it’s not an if, it’s a when.”

It’s been presumed that Blunt would return, but this sounds like real confirmation.

Liman even has some strong thoughts of how to subvert sequel-itis. “I’ve had some radical ideas about how to make a sequel that would interest me, in the same way that I had ideas of how you make an independent film and then ‘Swingers’ came along and it was like ‘Aha, that’s the perfect movie for me to test these ideas out on.’ I had these intellectual ideas on how you should make a sequel that are unlike how anybody else makes a sequel, and this script and this idea fit perfectly into that idea. So it’s gonna revolutionize how people make sequels. And again that’s why I try to do things like [a new VR film] ‘Invisible’ that are just, the revolution’s sort of built into the idea. It’s more heresy in the film world for me to pitch things that are sort of unheard of.”

And speaking of titles, Blunt always loved the original, original title — the one that came from the book. “That’s a bummer isn’t it? I gotta say, I love ‘All You Need Is Kill,’” she said in 2015. “I loved it…I thought it was more ironic and totally more than a movie, you know?”

Sorry Em, “Live Die Repeat And Repeat” is the title. Director Doug Liman is obviously returning and it’s actually a prequel that Cruise pitched himself, so presumably he’ll be back, too. No signs of a start date or release date so the film could be a few years off.
