While critics will have their say as the year in film winds down, sometimes the most interesting lists come from filmmakers themselves. Not only does it provide insight about their own personal tastes, it’s a nice window into the kind of work that piques the interest of directors and storytellers. It seems that in 2014, Edgar Wright was impressed with movies that played with form.
The moviemaker shared his list of favorite films of the year (in no particular order) with Esquire, and it’s telling stuff. From Richard Linklater‘s twelve-years-in-the-making "Boyhood" to Jonathan Glazer‘s near wordless "Under The Skin" to the live-die-repeat structure of "Edge Of Tomorrow" to the single-shot "Birdman," they all wowed Wright. Above all, they were distinctive.
"We need to make more original movies and audiences would do well to support original movies, for the future of the medium," he told the magazine. "I tire of franchises, remakes, and endless sequels. All of the movies I [mention below] work great as standalone stories. More please." No argument there.
Check out Edgar Wright’s favorite films of 2014 below.
Edgar Wright’s Favorite Films Of 2014 (in no particular order)
Boyhood
The Grand Budapest Hotel
Birdman
Snowpiercer
Interstellar
Nightcrawler
Under The Skin
The Lego Movie
Whiplash
Edge Of Tomorrow
Leviathan and A Touch of Sin were last year [2013] so, naturally, they wouldn\’t make a 2014 list.
How he talks about wanting original films and then lists mostly Hollywood movies…He\’s got the right to like whatever he likes, and he can list 10 blockbusters if he wants, but don\’t expect not to raise a few eyebrows if he follows up a list that includes the lego movie, interstellar, edge of tomorrow.. and say "we need more original movies." Bit weird. Still, a damn decent list.
They are EDGAR WRIGHT\’s favorite films, no one else\’s. He doesn\’t have to please you with his own personal choices. If you are allowed to like what you like, then afford EG the same courtesy.
Alphabetical list @Mark; A Touch of Sin is fantastic but that was released in 2013 @Parsyeb and one man\’s list is one man\’s list, everyone.
yeah, sup with all the hate? so he doesn\’t watch a lot of foreign films? i do and by no means do i disparage anyone who doesn\’t. however, i will call out anyone who has Interstellar on a best-of list. ouch.
Waaaaaaah, he needs more artsy foreign films other wise his personal opinions are irrelevant.
You guys are weird, he probably hasn\’t seen all those films you mentioned and I\’m sure he doesn\’t just sit around doing nothing all the time, they are decent choices from an unpretentious guy who enjoys films.
I currently share 8 of these with him in my list – toss out Whiplash and Interstellar for Gone Girl and Force Majeure…
Sounds like someone needs to see more movies made in languages other than English. For someone who\’s not working at present, you\’d think he\’d indulge in at least a few Netflix gems like A Touch of Sin.
The Lego Movie above leviathan? riiiggghhhtt
