If you were to ask me to select my 1000 favorite movies, I’d ask you to come back in a few weeks once I’ve carefully gone through multiple drafts, rewatched some films, and generally fretted over what made the cut. And while I don’t know how long it took Edgar Wright to pull together his selections, I can only imagine it was a monumental task. That being said, it’s a pretty terrific guide of movies that, if you haven’t seen already (and surely, on a list this big, there are going to be things you haven’t watched) you should definitely track down.

Compiled for Mubi, the list is compiled chronologically, so forget about debating rankings. Instead, sit back and take in the breadth of titles selected, ranging from silent cinema’s finest through the heyday of American movies of the 1970s, right up to Nicolas Winding Refn‘s “The Neon Demon,” the most recent entry. And while I won’t even attempt to condense Wright’s choices into a summation of who he is as a director, I think the sampling below of pictures from 1980 speaks pretty well to his wide range of taste.
