We don’t usually talk about TV, (excluding “The Wire”) but some of us have an apparent chubby for comedian Danny McBride and his recent HBO series, “Eastbound & Down.” McBride plays the exact same character as in everything else he’s been in. Seriously, the only thing diverse about this guy now is his fucking amazing hair. ‘Down’ is about Kenny Powers, (McBride) a former pro baseball player known for his foul mouth and reckless behavior. When his career ends, he moves back to his hometown to stay with his brother. (the under-appreciated John Hawkes) There, Kenny gets a job teaching P.E. at the local middle school while basically trying to have sex again with his ex high school sweetheart. ‘Down,’ created by McBride, Ben Best, and Jody Hill, boasts an impressive and non-gratuitous soundtrack unlike those horny teens on the CW.
‘Eastbound & Down’ Up for Season Two?
The show, while sometimes funny, ended its first season this past Sunday with definite potential to return while also providing a satisfying conclusion for those that appreciate a show that is somewhat grounded in reality. Major props to the creative team on ‘Down’ for maintaining artistic integrity while providing some of the most bad-ass images in recent TV.
The finale has left some people wondering whether or not the show is going to come back for a second season and with the press tour for Hill’s “Observe and Report” in progress, he has had time to comment on it.
“We’re thinking about it,” Hill told Chud. “We’re trying to sort out all the details right. We definitely don’t want to go for syndication or anything like that, and we know the ending we want to go for. But it could end right here, so we’re debating it. Do we keep it as one season that we’re proud of or do we go for one more?”
Fans of the show won’t have to worry about a group of sell out writers coming in to pick up where Hill and his creative team left off. “We’ll always have our hands in it,” said Hill. If it does come back, it will be eight episodes including a series finale.
Here is one of the best parts of the whole show. McBride shows up at a charity dance, high on ecstasy, and dances to a remix of Walter Murphy’s “A Fifth of Beethoven.”

This show has to have more and more seasons. You cannot let the show end like that. This is one of the funniest shows a lot of people have ever seen. Everyone I have showed it to our have talked to about it thought it was awesome.
I totally agree – Bring Back Eastbound and Down! We look forward to it every Sunday and I chuckle to myself all week at work about some of the great lines. “No, I play real sports, not try to see who can be the best at exercising.”

I’m Canadian born but from British parents and have been a fan of all British comedy all my life and the one lesson I’ve learned from comedy shows is that sometimes less is more. Take the British “Office” series for example. Relax fellow comedy lovers, the same writers are not going into hibernation. Think about character development and where the series will go. I loved the show and maybe it may squeeze out a few episodes more……
