Last week we gave you a first look report from an early test screening of Mark Romanek’s highly anticipated third feature-length, “Never Let Me Go.” Based on Kazuo Ishiguro’s bestselling novel, the screenplay was written by Alex Garland (of Danny Boyle fame including, “The Beach,” “28 Days Later” and “Sunshine”) and the cast — Andrew Garfield (“Red Riding” trilogy, “The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus”), Carey Mulligan (“An Education”) and Keira Knightley and Sally Hawkins — is rather stellar.
The picture is a futuristic thriller about a trio who grew up in a boarding school with no contact or knowledge of the outside world, until they discover they are clones grown for the sole purpose of organ donation.
Director Spike Jonze, who is buddies with Mark Romanek, recently saw the film, said he hearts it and even said he cried during some of the footage that he saw.
It seems like this film is amazingly under the radar right now. But when I was in England, our good friend Mark Romanek was filming a movie adapted from the book of the same name by Kazuo Ishiguro and I got to visit him on the set and sneak into his edit room on a weekend and see some of it. I don’t know what I can and cant say about it but I love the story. Even just a few scenes he showed me on their own were really moving. The combination of a science fiction film handled very subtly and naturalistically that also made me cry and is beautifully photographed (Adam Kimmel) is a trifecta. Congrats Mark!! We will post more as we can. Here is a shot stolen from the edit room that gives some sense of the look of the film and Mark at lunch on weekend. We had insane Japanese food at a place called Roca on Charlotte street.
We can’t wait to see this. Very highly anticipated for 201o. Fox Searchlight is one of the film’s backers and likely the ones distributing it in the U.S. next year. Other cast members include Charlotte Rampling, Nathalie Richard and Andrea Riseborough.
I don't care for the new "Read more" feature on all the posts now.
I don't care for your mother!
But seriously, thanks for the feedback.
The "read more" is horrible!
The "read more" feature is screwing up the front page of the site, making the font smaller and smaller for previous posts.
But once clicking the "read more" link, that post is ok.
With the quality of the book in mind, this deserves to be among the most anticipated for 2010.
The flashbacks could be difficult to pull off, but there's a great road trip element to it, much like '28 days later' had.
A very quick glance at Mark Romanek's IMDb page will show you that this will be his *third* feature length film. His feature directorial debut was STATIC, which he co-wrote with Keith Gordon (who starred). It's a weird little movie, well worth finding for those interested.
third, sorry, you're correct.I keep forgetting this.
I loved the book, love Mark Romanek. I never understood why hes not as famous yet as some of the other music video directors. One hour photo was good in my opinion, and his music videos were some of the most innovative in music video history. Maybe this movie will make him more known. Now with all these 90's music video directors going into feature films, when is Chris Cunningham? That man is a genus!!!
This is very interesting book which is describes the life of Kathy H., a young woman of 31, focusing at first on her childhood at an unusual boarding school and eventually her adult life. I liked it very much.
yes the "read more" is screwing up the formatting of the site – but that can be fixed…
there are few things more agrivating than coming to a site like this and seeing, on one single page, 9000 posts…it's like a myspace page, sorry, that may seem harsh, but it's true.
please keep the "read more"
just get someone who knows a bit about css to fix it up a bit.
i think the answer is no more "read more"s and fewer stories on the main page. you guys've got like 40? 10-20 is fine.
Making hipsters cry is like shooting fish in a barrel.
Spike Jonze is brilliant and the test footage looks fantastic. I really hope Warner Bros. doesn't boot Jonze and the script. This is a movie I'd see based on Jonze's direction and the source material alone.
jonze isn't directing?
Jonze isn't directing. Not sure where you're getting that.
I saw the film. And am now reading the book. I wont spoil anything for anyone. But I know that the execs are freaking out on loosing money on this one. Its an indie movie made with more money. And its going to be hard to understand it for a lot of people.
That being said.
You will most likely cry, and feel smart for seeing it.
