Got a Tip?

The Duplass Brothers Wrap ‘Jeff Who Lives At Home,’ Forgotten Sports-Comedy ‘The Do-Deca-Pentathalon’ Gets Picked Up

With their star-studded family-comedy “Cyrus” set to begin its theatrical rollout on June 18th, the Duplass Brothers look to to be having a banner year with two features already gearing to follow up their summer flick.

A profile in the New York Times has revealed that the brothers are already in post-production on their next big feature, a stoner-comedy starring Jason Segel, Ed Helms, Susan Sarandon and Judy Greer titled “Jeff Who Lives At Home.”

The story centers on two brothers— one who is going through a mid-life crisis (Helms) and believes his wife (Greer) is having an affair, and the other a lovable loser pothead (Segel) still living with his mom (Sarandon) — as they set out to spy on the wife, a journey with all sorts of unintended consequences.

The profile also adds that the brothers’ long-forgotten sports-comedy “The Do-Deca-Pentathalon” has evidently been completed and “recently purchased by an undisclosed studio.” Starring Duplass regular Steve Zissis (“Baghead”) and Mark Kelly (“Mad Men”), the film was shot all the way back in April of 2008 and was in post-production before being putting on the back-burner “because ‘Cyrus’ picked up steam. So we’re we’re going to pick that up and take that out in the world,” the younger Mark told /Film at Sundance this year.

The story sounds more in the vein of their ‘mumblecore’ work (however much they’d resent us for using that term) following “two brothers who compete in their own private 25-event Olympics that no one else is allowed to view or compete in,” Jay explained to NOLA, chuckling. “It’s our brand of comedy with a dark, sort of tragic undertone.” Sounds hilarious, like a sports-centric “Humpday” and kind of perfect for their sensibilities.

The brothers have plenty of options to unveil their new films as well; they’ll seemingly have both ready in time if necessary for the fall festivals which could be a great platform for them though their loyalties seem to lie with Sundance, the festival that saw them break out years ago with the short film, “This Is John.” Either way, we can’t wait to see what they have in store.

On top of all this, the brothers are still attached to helm the wedding-comedy “Table 19,” which is being produced under Shawn Levy’s banner at Fox Searchlight and centers on a gang of misfits at a wedding party singles table. Exciting times are definitely ahead for the Duplass’.
