‘Dungeons & Dragons’: Paramount’s Fantasy Film Adds Hugh Grant As The Villain & Sophia Lillis

Paramount Pictures‘ new “Dungeons & Dragons” movie has added two more cast members, according to Deadline.  Hugh Grant is set to play the fantasy film’s villain, and young actress Sophia Lillis (“IT,” “Sharp Objects“) has also nabbed an undisclosed supporting part.

Grant most recently worked on Guy Ritchie‘s “The Gentlemen” and Ritchie’s untitled Jason Statham spy flick formerly known as “Five Eyes.” He also appeared alongside Nicole Kidman in the HBO drama “The Undoing.

Lillis is best known for her work on New Line Cinema‘s successful Stephen King adaptations “IT,” “IT Chapter Two,” both directed by Andy Muschietti. She had a breakout turn as the younger version of Amy Adams in HBO’s “Sharp Objects.”

The “Dungeons & Dragons” cast already consists of Chris PineMichelle RodriguezJustice Smith, and “Bridgerton” breakout star Rege-Jean Page

Plot details are being kept behind closed doors but will be written and directed by “Game Night” filmmakers Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley who also co-wrote the first “Spider-Man” Marvel/Sony movie ‘Homecoming.’ The film is based on the beloved role-playing game; however, it’s unknown if they’ll be using any particular stories from within the existing mythology or creating something brand new for the feature film using the game manuals as a guide.

The filmmakers could easily craft something original for the studio, which apparently is going to be expanded upon on the small-screen as well. “John Wick” creator and architect Derek Kolstad is also working on a live-action series that will be set in the world of “Dungeons & Dragons” and could easily connect to the upcoming film.

Filming will be taking place in Belfast, Northern Ireland, and various exterior locations in France that had been scouted last year during the pandemic. The team assembled to work behind the camera includes “Game Night” cinematographer Barry Peterson and “The Falcon & The Winter Soldier” production designer Raymond Chan.

Paramount has given “Dungeons & Dragons” a May 27, 2022 release date.
