Of course, that first film was a bit of amuse bouche for those newbies getting introduced to the complex/expansive sci-fi world and the overwhelming volume of characters, not unlike “Game of Thrones.” Villeneuve was smart to split to the single story into two parts allowing folks to absorb the first bit of information before the wave of action sequences come into play as the Fremen led by Paul (alongside his adoptive Fremen tribe) goes to war with Baron Harkonnen and The Emperor. Lady Jessica and Paul teach the Fremen advanced fighting techniques that eventually make them a threat to even the Emperor’s Sardaukar as they rally the other Fremen on Arrakis to fight against the occupying Harkonnen forces.
Villeneuve not only directed the sci-fi fantasy thriller but he co-wrote the script with Jon Spaihts. Here’s the synopsis:
This follow-up film will explore the mythic journey of Paul Atreides as he unites with Chani and the Fremen while on a warpath of revenge against the conspirators who destroyed his family. Facing a choice between the love of his life and the fate of the known universe, he endeavors to prevent a terrible future only he can foresee.
New actors who will be introduced in “Dune: Part Two” include Austin Butler as the Baron’s deadly nephew Feyd-Ruthra Harkonnen, Christopher Walken as the conflict’s main puppet master Emperor Shaddam IV, Florence Pugh as Princess Irulan Corrino, Lea Seydoux as Lady Margot from the Emperor’s court, Souheila Yacoub as Shishakli, and Tim Blake Nelson. Returning cast members consist of Timothée Chalamet, Zendaya, Rebecca Ferguson, Javier Bardem, Josh Brolin, Stellan Skarsgård, Dave Bautista, Charlotte Rampling, and Stephen McKinley Henderson.
What’s interesting is that Villeneuve has already talked about adapting the second novel “Dune Messiah” to round out a trilogy. Although, work on that third film hasn’t started and likely wouldn’t be announced until the studio was happy with the outcome of the opening weekend numbers for this next pic. Legendary is also behind the Max series “Dune: The Sisterhood,” which recently had some creative setbacks and takes place 10,000 years before the events of the original novel. The streaming series follows the Harkonnen Sisters (the Baron’s ancestors) as they combat forces that threaten the future of humankind, and establish the fabled sect known as the Bene Gesserit.
“Dune: Part Two” will be unleashed on November 3 and you can watch that new trailer below.
