When “Cloverfield” screenwriter Drew Goddard was tapped last December to write the supervillain-center “Amazing Spider-Man” spin-off, “The Sinister Six,” for Sony it was with the understanding that the director’s chair was Goddard’s if he wanted it. Here we are four months later and the screenwriter-turned-director has made his decision.
THR reports Goddard “is nearing a deal” with the studio to helm the spinoff, which would be his second feature-length directorial outing. A timetable for the film hasn’t been announced but it’ll likely arrive after Goddard delivers the pilot for the “Daredevil” series he’s writing for Sony’s comic-book rivals, Disney and Marvel, with the show to unspool on Netflix.
By giving Goddard both writing and directing duties, the studio seems to be giving him a lot of leeway but will Goddard be able to bring some of the inventiveness that he displayed in his debut directorial feature “The Cabin in the Woods?” With the public threatened with a new Spidey film every year, we can only hope Goddard brings some of that off-kilter energy and unexpected narrative twists.
Yes, because the Sinister Six need their own movie…
