Got a Tip?

Drew Barrymore To Direct ‘Wizard of Oz’ Sequel ‘Surrender Dorothy’

Ever since the original 1939 classic “The Wizard of Oz,” there has been a plethora of reinterpretations or pseudo-sequels to the original story. And now, according to Pajiba, Drew Barrymore is set to direct yet another followup to the tale.

“Surrender Dorothy” was originally announced in 2002 with Zach Helm (“Stranger Than Fiction”) writing the script and Barrymore attached to star. It’s not clear on whether Barrymore is still the lead, but the project, which will be Barrymore’s sophomore directing effort after “Whip It,” is still set to be produced by Warner Bros. Our guess is she’s not doing double duty and will find a new lead.

The story will revolve around “the great, great granddaughter of Dorothy who has to learn how to use the power of those ruby red slippers to keep the Wicked Witch of the West from taking control of the kingdoms of Earth and Oz.” No word on any casting yet, but the description sounds like it leaves a lot of room for different potential leading ladies.

Barrymore’s film will be added to the recent slate of ‘Oz’ adaptations along with Adam Shankman or Sam Mendes’ “The Great Powerful,” a prequel chronicling the development of the wizard himself with Robert Downey Jr. said to be potentially starring as the wizard. Additionally, Josh Olson and Todd McFarlane have had a revised ‘Oz’ story in the works since 2007, said to be providing an edgier take on the original story, but that seems to have gone dormant. With at least two projects in active development, we wouldn’t be surprised if a new phase of ‘Oz’ revivalist fever comes into play in the future, meaning next month.
