Sure, the new teaser for the DC Universe series “Doom Patrol” doesn’t feature any plot and is just a silly Christmas-themed tease, but somehow the 30 seconds worth of footage has me horrified, cringe-filled, excited, and confused all at the same time.
The teaser just has the various members of the titular team posing for what will be their upcoming holiday card. But that’s just the first thing that’s odd about the teaser. The part that is likely going to polarize viewers is the cast of characters. Without delving too deep into the comic book histories, just understand that “Doom Patrol” features characters that are not A-list. Hell, they’re not even B or C-list. We’re talking characters sitting firmly in the D-list.
There’s Crazy Jane, Elasti-Girl, Negative Man, Robotman, and yes, Cyborg. Outside of Cyborg, there’s probably not one recognizable name among them. But the actors involved might raise a few eyebrows. The series stars Matt Bomer, Brendan Fraser, Timothy Dalton, Diane Guerrero, and Alan Tudyk. And yes, that was Fraser’s voice coming out of Robotman at the end.

But perhaps most hilarious of all is the fact that in 30 seconds, DC Universe has created a Cyborg that looks better than Warner Bros.’ version of the character seen in last year’s “Justice League.” Practical effects seem like the obvious choice, but yet, the good folks at WB went all CGI and it looked terrible. Leave it to a much lower-budgeted TV show to show the movie people how it’s done.
So yeah, long story short, “Doom Patrol” looks strange. But that’s not a terrible thing, right? “Titans” seems to have a big following, showing that DC Universe might know what it’s doing with these characters. So despite the teaser being almost laughable, it is intriguing.
“Doom Patrol” debuts on the streaming service on February 15, 2019.
Here’s the synopsis for the series:
DOOM PATROL is a re-imagining of one of DC’s most beloved groups of outcast Super Heroes: Robotman, Negative Man, Elasti-Girl and Crazy Jane, led by modern-day mad scientist Dr. Niles Caulder (The Chief). The Doom Patrol’s members each suffered horrible accidents that gave them superhuman abilities — but also left them scarred and disfigured. Traumatized and downtrodden, the team found purpose through The Chief, who brought them together to investigate the weirdest phenomena in existence — and to protect Earth from what they find. Part support group, part Super Hero team, the Doom Patrol is a band of super-powered freaks who fight for a world that wants nothing to do with them. Picking up after the events of TITANS, DOOM PATROL will find these reluctant heroes in a place they never expected to be, called to action by none other than Cyborg, who comes to them with a mission hard to refuse, but with a warning that is hard to ignore: their lives will never, ever be the same.
