Who knows what’s next for P.T. Anderson? Given the director’s work rate, it’s safe to expect his follow-up to “Licorice Pizza” won’t head into production for another couple of years at least. But when it happens, could it involve a reunion between him and composer Jon Brion? Jonny Greenwood has made the music for each of Anderson’s last five films, but before that Brion did work on three: Anderson’s 1996 debut “Hard Eight,” 1999’s “Magnolia,” and 2002’s “Punch Drunk Love.”
So, who’s to say Brion couldn’t work with the filmmaker again, even though the last time was two decades ago? In a new interview with Vulture, Brion discussed the possibility of a reunion between him and Anderson. And the answer? There’s the possibility of something for an upcoming movie, but nothing is set in stone. “There may be one,” Brion told Vulture. “We’ve done a few things. We did live-theater-y things around town. He’s got a great thing going with Jonny Greenwood. I don’t see an issue with that as long as good work is getting done. I’m not an unsatisfied fan. Everybody’s working.”
But is Brion upset that he no longer collaborates with Anderson regularly? Not really. “Also, artists aren’t, for the most part, supposed to be monogamous,” Brion continued. “There are cases where it works real well, some permanent collaboration, but the actual nature of collaboration is that there should be change. There’s one thing we’ve talked about that would be for a future film. So one never knows.”
Since “Punch Drunk Love,” he’s worked with filmmakers like David O. Russell, Charlie Kaufman, Adam McKay, and Greta Gerwig for musical scores. He’s prolific in the studio, too, working on production for musicians as diverse as Frank Ocean, Bruce Springsteen, Mac Miller, Beyonce, Sky Ferreira, and jazz musician Brad Mehldau. So, Brion isn’t exactly starved for work, and he’s certainly too busy to worry whether he and Anderson will reconnect.
Still, just imagine Brion’s work in the next or future P.T. Anderson film. It’s true, Jonny Greenwood has done some excellent work for Anderson, especially “There Will Be Blood” and “Phantom Thread,” but who says he and Brion couldn’t join forces somehow for Anderson’s next project? Between those three prodigious talents, anything is possible.
