Got a Tip?

Disney & Weinstein Company Form MegaPact To Promote Rob Marshall’s ‘Nine,’ Plus New Photos

The Weinstein Company, always with an ace up their sleeve, have pulled out the whole deck this fall, by announcing a “megapact” with Disney to promote their Oscar hopeful “Nine.” The deal will find promotional content for the film blitzed across the numerous channels the round-eared media conglomerate owns.

On November 17th, “Dancing With The Stars” with have a routine set to the song “Be Italian” from the film, while dancers wear outfits from the movie. On November 22nd, a two-minute trailer will be “road blocked,” playing simultaneously on Lifetime, ABC Family, SoapNet, A&E and Bio and will also be shown during the American Music Awards on ABC. Meanwhile, throughout the month of December, the film be written into episodes of “All My Children,” “One Life to Live” and “General Hospital” (perhaps to reach older Academy members who can’t miss their stories?).
And that’s not all, a microsite will appear on ABC.com with a contest (probably a trip to Italy), thirty minute making-of featurette and the trailer to the film. While this will certainly be a huge boost in creating awareness for the film, how much impact it will have with critics and awards voters remains to be seen. Either way though, it sounds like a massive campaign assault.

Included here are some new “Nine” photos you may not have seen yet, the film is obviously a musical directed by Rob Marshall that stars Daniel Day-Lewis, Sophia Lauren, Judi Dench (all pictured here) and many many more (it’s an all-star cast including Marion Cotillard, Nicole Kidman, Penelope Cruz, Kate Hudson, etc.). There was actually a pleebian screening in New York last night. Got a report?

“Nine” hit theaters December 18 in limited release and then December 25 wide.

I think plenty of people will go see this.
Another recent musical, Mamma Mia was a pretty good box office hit ($144 domestic for a $609 ! total).
Even if 'Nine' isn't as well known as Mamma Mia (obviously) it still has a good chance to crack $80-$100 million domestic. (Chicago made $170 as a reference point).

If anything, it'll be a "counter-programming" success given the movies coming out around the same time.

  2. Srsly. I'll go pay to see this before I go pay to see Avatar. I'm really looking forward to it.

I've said it once, i'll say it again.

Those who say, "I don't like musicals"… it's pretty much akin to people who say, "I like all music except country and rap," it's born out of ignorance and they basically don't know what they're talking about.

There's a bit of an adjustment curve as it is an antiquated form, but musicals are great, but not surprised anyone under 25-or-so just assumes they all suck.
