Got a Tip?

Directors Guild Award Nominations Include Clint Eastwood, Alejandro González Iñárritu, Richard Linklater & Wes Anderson

Grand Budapest Hotel, Wes AndersonGet ready to debate, roll your eyes and clap your hands all at once. The Directors Guild Nominations have rolled in and it’s a mix of worthy contenders, veterans sliding in and at least one totally head-scratching choice. Onwards!

Perhaps the most obvious nominee is Richard Linklater for "Boyhood," which continues to show up wherever statues are being handed out. Same goes for Alejandro González Iñárritu‘s equally acclaimed "Birdman." Meanwhile, credit Fox Searchlight for doing a helluva job with "The Grand Budapest Hotel," especially since the film’s creative braintrust doesn’t seem to be campaigning at all. And Warner Bros. has been pushing "American Sniper" a little harder, having side-stepped middling reviews and turned it into an awards season dark horse, with Clint Eastwood popping up here.

The most controversial choice? Morten Tyldum for "The Imitation Game." His having been nominated is baffling, considering that the likes of Paul Thomas Anderson, David Fincher and perhaps most egregiously Ava DuVernay have been left out. In fact, the shutouts for "Selma" at both the PGAs and DGAs makes for an ominous omen when the Oscar nominations roll in on Thursday.

  1. Wellll… I wouldn\’t go so far as to call Selma a "lie"; what bio-pic doesn\’t take a little, er, "creative liberty" here and there? It is indeed, however, a Lifetime TV movie remake, sorry to say. Inherent Vice was too convoluted and confusing, isolating its audience, so I get that snub. But snubbing FINCHER for Tyldum? I don\’t get that, man.

  2. Selma, please. The movie plays like a Lifetime movie and is also a lie. The DGA saw that. Imitation Game was great, so that\’s not controversial. I found Boyhood overrated, boring, and a bit of a stunt.

  3. Paramount botched Duvarney\’s campaign, Inherent Vice\’s reception has been okay, and Fincher\’s film may be too pulp for the DGAs and maybe the Oscars.

  4. thoughts? you guys are killing me with all these ads. as someone who does not possess – more like refuses – the devices this blog is formatted for, every time indiewire masthead adds new advertisements, it kills my interest in the content of the sites. you\’re not to blame, obviously. but there is something inherently dubious about restricting per fold/page content by widening the margins for ads. my 2 (uncommon) cents.
