Got a Tip?

Director Richard Donner Says A ‘Goonies’ Sequel Is Apparently Back On

null

“We were thinking [about] that [the sequel] for years back—couldn’t do it. Felt like everything we were doing would hurt what we had with the original,” Director Richard Donner said about a proposed sequel to the beloved “The Gooniesmovie in 2010. “I don’t think there’d be a sequel. I wouldn’t remake it.”

And so that seemed to close the door on any mooted ‘Goonies’ movies—but has Donner changed his mind? Accosted by TMZ recently, it would seem so. Asked by the celeb-hounding outlet if he would was ever going to make another comic book movie, the filmmaker said, “If you call ‘Goonies’ a comic book. We’re doing a sequel.”

Who from the original cast—Corey Feldman, Josh Brolin, Sean Astin, Jeff Cohen and Martha Plimpton—would return? “Hopefully all of them,” Donner said. So would this be the old gang back together as 40 year olds? Or a new generation being mentored by the old ‘Goonies’? Who knows? Either way, we think it’s a bad idea and they should let it go. But that time has past. Brands are king and studios always want to do a reboot, a redo, a pass-the-torch-on, a la “Ghostbusters 3” and “Star Wars Episode VII” etc.

While a “Goonies” sequel seemed all but dead in recent years, Sean Astin has held out hope ,and it’s possible he knew of the plan all along. “It will happen,” he told IGN in 2012. “I’m 1,000 percent certain there will be a sequel. I will bet my children on it.”

  1. I don't think Donner was saying it's going to happen, only that maybe it should. He was saying that if The Goonies is considered a comic book movie, then it's well overdue for a sequel because that's what the industry is interested in right now. The reporters suggested the possibility and all that Donner did was neglect to deny it. He's been in the business for long enough to know what makes a good story.
