It’s hard to tell what’s an Oscar player and what’s not an Oscar player this year given that the Academy Awards were delayed, we’re getting two extra months of campaigning and films don’t necessarily need to be released within the constraints of 2020 to be eligible. Take “The Dig,” it has a superstar trio of Carey Mulligan, Ralph Fiennes, and Lily James, in it, but it’s not coming out until January 29, 2021, on Netflix (January 15 theatrically, in a limited run). Normally, that means a dud, January is dumping ground season normally, but obviously, these are not normal times.
Regardless, helmed by Australian film and theatre director Simon Stone (“The Daughter“), written by Moira Buffini and based on the novel by John Preston, “The Dig” features an impressive overall cast that includes Carey Mulligan, Ralph Fiennes, Lily James, Johnny Flynn, Ben Chaplin, Ken Stott, Archie Barnes, and Monica Dolan. The first trailer for the film has arrived and gives us a taste of what looks like a tasteful drama. Here’s the official synopsis:
