According to Variety, Derek Cianfrance has signed a two-year, overall deal with HBO. While no new projects were named, the report claims that the deal will cover a variety of projects, which presumably means that it could encompass both TV series and films. It’s also unclear if any of these projects will be exclusive to the upcoming HBO Max streaming service, though it’s obvious that anything released on HBO will eventually find its way onto the new WarnerMedia platform.

Before his work on “I Know This Much Is True,” Cianfrance was best known for his feature films including “Blue Valentine,” “The Place Beyond the Pines,” and “The Light Between Oceans.” While none of those films were massive blockbusters, the filmmaker received critical acclaim, as well as awards and festival recognition.

His latest project is the aforementioned drama series coming to HBO, starring Mark Ruffalo in dual roles. In our review of “I Know This Much is True,” we said, “While an unswerving gut punch that could potentially depress some viewers, ‘IKTMIT’ is ultimately hopeful and a masterclass in the complexities of broken people and their struggles. Not enough can be said of just how incredible and devastating Ruffalo is in his two contrasting parts, the rancorous yet melancholy Dominick and the introverted and unhinged Thomas. Suffice to say, there’s likely an Emmy waiting for him and probably a Golden Globe—it’s one of the most convincing and humane portraits of pain, dysfunction, and suffering you’ll see on TV this year.”

It’s unclear when Cianfrance will begin production on a new project for HBO, but “I Know This Much is True” is set to debut on May 10.
