Long before “The Equalizer” hit cinemas last fall, there was already talk of making a sequel. That’s just how the Hollywood game is played these days. It’s not enough to boot up a vintage TV series into a movie, it has to become a viable franchise too. And while the R-rated “The Equalizer” was mildly received by critics, audiences ate it up to the tune of over $190 million worldwide. So, you know what that means….
Sony has announced that “The Equalizer 2” is in the works, with Denzel Washington expected to reprise his role as the man with a very special set of skills. And…that’s about it. No word yet on who’s writing the script or if Antoine Fuqua will be back, or Chloe Moretz for that matter. But time well tell.
And while “The Equalizer” wasn’t particularly good, it was enjoyably dumb in its way, and Washington was a lot of fun in the lead role. There’s definitely a lot of room for improvement, so I’d welcome a leaner, meaner followup. [THR]
