‘Deep Water’: Erotic Thriller Starring Ben Affleck & Ana De Armas Being Sent To Streaming

Just a few days ago, it was revealed that 20th Century Studios had pulled the Adrian Lyne erotic thriller, “Deep Water,” from its release schedule. At the time, we speculated the odd move (made about a month before the film was supposed to be released) was likely due to the studio wanting to send the film to streaming. Well, it appears that was exactly the case.

According to Deadline, 20th Century Studios/New Regency have decided to ship “Deep Water” to Hulu for domestic release at an unspecified date. For international audiences, it appears the film will likely be heading to Amazon Prime Video. The report claims the reason for the move comes from the studio’s reluctance to release an adult thriller at a time when adult-themed films are struggling to recover at the box office.

“Deep Water” is the first film from Adrian Lyne (“Fatal Attraction,” “Indecent Proposal”) in 20 years since the release of “Unfaithful.” The film stars Ben Affleck and Ana de Armas as a married couple who try to spice things up by allowing each other to take new lovers. However, things get a bit crazy when people around the couple start dying. Joining Affleck and de Armas in the cast are Tracy Letts, Rachel Blanchard, Dash Mihok, Lil Rel Howery, Jacob Elordi, Kristen Connolly, and Jade Fernandez

While the box office issue seems to be pretty valid, it’s interesting to note that recently on Twitter, podcast host Karina Longworth shared a tweet saying that perhaps the content of the film is also a reason why the studio had issues finding a home for the film, after speaking with someone who described the film as “too sadistic.”

Of course, that’s just one person’s opinion and may not be all that accurate. However, when you see a film get delayed for quite some time (even when there wasn’t the COVID excuse), combined with zero marketing materials being released just a month before its most recent release date, things don’t seem all that great for the prospect of the film. And in the case of “Deep Water,” don’t be surprised if the film gets very little fanfare when it’s dumped on Hulu/Amazon at some point in 2022.
